New Students

Step One: I want to play an instrument!

At the beginning of the year, students will see their music specialist (me!) for an assembly during the school day. Music teachers will explain 4th grade music and demonstrate the instruments offered. Parents will receive an invitation to Music Parent Information Night.

Step Two: What instrument should I choose?

There are three choices for 4th grade students.

Violin

The violin is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the string family of instruments. It has four strings, comes in a variety of sizes to fit each child, and has a bright sound.

Viola

The viola is slightly larger in size than a violin, has four strings, and is the medium-range instrument of the string family. It comes in a variety of sizes and has beautiful mellow sound. The viola is one of most popular instruments in 4th grade!

Cello

cello

The cello is the largest string instrument offered in elementary school. It has four strings, comes in a variety of sizes, and has a deep, rich sound. While the cello is the largest, the instrument is hollow and therefore not has heavy as it looks. Choosing the cello is a special decision for the entire family.

Step Three: Wait! Do not rush out to rent (or buy) an instrument. Your child needs to be “sized”.

This is probably the most important detail of the entire school year.

String instruments come in a variety of sizes. Why is it important for your child to play the correct size?

During the second music class of the year, I will meet with each student separately and determine which size instrument will be comfortable and last them the entire school year. Please note: the correct size for your child is based on a variety of factors (not height). Allow the string music specialist to use their training to size your child.

Step Four: Receive a packet of information.

Each student will receive a packet of information containing his or her size of instrument and helpful information regarding where to get the instrument.

Step Five: What to look for when getting your instrument.

Each instrument should:

  • Be the correct size
  • Have a bow, four working strings, four fine tuners, and rosin (Violins and Violas need a shoulder pad)
  • Be clean
  • Be secure inside a case with a luggage tag (labeled with the student name, school, and classroom teacher)

  • All for Strings Book 1
  • 1-inch three ring binder
  • Pencil

Step Six: Bring your instrument to school for music class!

Let’s start the music learning! While we are excited to start playing, you have plenty of time to get your instrument and materials. Students will not be “in trouble” or “kicked out” of class for not having their instrument. It is recommended that students bring all materials within two weeks of receiving their sizing information.
